Breath Guides Explained
Guided Breathing in the Aroshanti App
Of all the tools for finding calm, few are as immediate and powerful as the breath, and few are as easy to overlook. The Aroshanti app’s Breath tab makes it beautifully simple to practise, with guided breath exercises you can follow along with, anytime you need to calm, centre or reset. Here is a gentle explanation of the breath guides, and how to make the most of them.

Why the Breath?
Your breath is a remarkable doorway to calm, one you carry everywhere. By slowing and deepening it, especially by lengthening the out-breath, you can gently activate your body’s own relaxation response, easing stress and settling the nervous system.
This is not wishful thinking; slow, conscious breathing is one of the best-supported ways to calm the body and mind. We explore it fully in our guide to breathwork.
What Are the Breath Guides?
The breath guides are simple, guided breathing practices within the app’s Breath tab. Rather than trying to remember a technique, you follow along, letting a gentle visual and rhythm lead your breathing in and out, so you can relax and let the guide do the counting.
It makes breathwork effortless: there is nothing to learn or get right, only to follow, and breathe. The app offers a generous range of guides, so you can find the one that suits your moment.
The Core Techniques
Among the practices you can explore, a few time-honoured techniques form the heart of guided breathing:
- Box breathing, breathing in, holding, out and holding again in equal counts, for steady, grounded calm. See our guide to box breathing.
- 4-7-8 breathing, a longer, soothing exhale that is especially lovely for winding down and sleep, explored in our guide to the 4-7-8 technique.
- The physiological sigh, a quick, two-breath reset for an instant of calm, covered in our guide to the physiological sigh.
- Slow, coherent breathing, gently even breaths at a calming pace, to settle body and mind.
- Extended-exhale breathing, simply making the out-breath longer than the in-breath, to ease the system down.
How to Use the Breath Tab
Using the breath guides could not be simpler. Open the Breath tab, choose a guide that suits how you are feeling, settle into a comfortable position, and follow along, letting the gentle visual and pace lead your breathing. Even a few minutes can make a real difference. There is no need to strain or breathe deeply if that feels uncomfortable; simply follow softly, at your own ease, and let the practice do its quiet work.
When to Use Which
Different guides suit different moments. Reach for a longer-exhale practice like 4-7-8 when you are winding down or preparing for sleep; box breathing when you need steady, grounded focus before something demanding; the physiological sigh for a quick reset in a stressful moment; and slow, coherent breathing any time you simply wish to settle. Over time, you will discover which practices serve you best, and when.
The breath guides turn one of the most powerful tools for calm into something wonderfully simple: just follow, and breathe. Explore them gently, discover the practices that soothe you most, and let your breath become a reliable, ever-present path back to calm, whenever and wherever you need it.
