Healing with Nature Sounds
Science and field tests have measured the benefits
The gentle gurgling sound of a stream, the soothing sound of wind rustling through a woodland or bird chirping in trees are the kinds of sounds that are not only calming but have be found to have profound benefits on our health and well-being, according to a research review published in April 2021 in the PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) research journal.
The review looked at 18 studies investigating the health benefits of natural sound, where participants listened to recordings of outdoor sounds in laboratory settings. The study extended their research to natural soundscapes and the impact of these acoustic environments in national parks across the United States.
Participants reported less stress and improved health outcomes; such as decreased pain, improved mood, and enhanced cognitive performance, after listening to recordings of nature sounds.

Our biological connection to nature sounds
Being in nature is in our DNA. Living amongst busy city streets or urban areas is not natural and is certainly not where we evolved from.
The lead author of the above study, Rachel Buxton, PhD, a research associate and conservation biologist in the Department of Biology at Carleton University in Ottawa, says she isn’t surprised by the findings.
“From an evolutionary perspective, humans are hardwired to attend to signals of danger and security. And an environment that is filled with natural sounds feels safe and allows us to let our guard down,” she says. Source
Throughout the long evolution of our species, we have been embedded in and surrounded by the many natural sounds of our planet.

Source of Natural Healing
Nature sounds can be beneficial in treating various physical, emotional, and psychological conditions. Some of the conditions that nature sounds may help treat or alleviate include:
Stress and Anxiety – The calming effect of nature sounds can help reduce stress and anxiety levels. Listening to nature sounds has been shown to activate the body’s relaxation response, promoting a sense of tranquility and reducing the production of stress hormones.
Insomnia and Sleep Disorders – Nature sounds can assist in improving sleep quality by promoting relaxation and easing the mind. Many people find it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep when they listen to soothing nature sounds before bedtime.
Depression and Mood Disorders – Exposure to nature sounds has been linked to improved mood and emotional well-being. The sounds can act as mood enhancers, helping to lift spirits and combat feelings of sadness or depression.

Cognitive Function – Nature sounds may enhance cognitive function and concentration. They can provide a peaceful background that helps improve focus, productivity, and mental clarity.
High Blood Pressure – Listening to nature sounds has been associated with reduced blood pressure levels, making it potentially beneficial for individuals with hypertension.
Pain Management – Nature sounds have been used in complementary therapies to help manage pain. The distraction and relaxation they provide can aid in reducing the perception of pain and discomfort.
Tinnitus Relief – For individuals with tinnitus (ringing in the ears), gentle nature sounds can provide relief and mask the persistent noise associated with the condition.
Attention Deficit Disorders – Nature sounds might aid individuals with attention deficit disorders by promoting a calmer and more focused state of mind.
While nature sounds can complement traditional medical treatments and support overall well-being, they may not be a substitute for professional medical care in severe or chronic conditions. It is essential to seek guidance from healthcare professionals for a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to individual needs. But of course listening to nature sounds
A focus on mindfulness
Relaxation – Nature sounds can be a quick way to create a calm and tranquil space.
Mindfulness and Presence -Listening to nature sounds can serve as an anchor to the present moment. The immersive experience of these sounds encourages mindfulness, allowing us to let go of worries about the past or future and fully embrace the beauty of the present. Being present in nature’s melody can be profoundly grounding, bringing a heightened sense of awareness and clarity.
Emotional Healing – Nature sounds can evoke powerful emotions and memories, allowing for emotional healing and release. Listening to familiar nature sounds can evoke feelings of comfort, while the vastness and power of nature can inspire awe and a sense of perspective. This emotional connection to nature contributes to a sense of inner peace and healing.
Immersion in Nature – For those unable to physically experience nature, nature sounds offer a means of virtual immersion. Whether you’re confined to a busy urban environment or unable to venture outdoors due to health reasons, nature sounds can provide a nourishing connection to the natural world.
