Music for Yin Yoga
Sound for Slow, Deep Practice
Yin yoga is a world away from a flowing vinyasa class. Slow, still and deeply meditative, it asks us to settle into long-held poses and simply be, and the music that accompanies it should do the same.
The right soundtrack can transform a yin practice, soothing the restlessness that long holds can bring and holding a quiet, spacious atmosphere for going inward. Here is how to choose music for yin yoga.

What Is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is a slow, passive style in which poses are held for several minutes at a time, often on the floor, gently working into the body’s deeper connective tissues.
Where dynamic styles build heat and movement, yin cultivates stillness, patience and introspection, making it as much a meditation as a physical practice. This meditative quality shapes everything about the music that suits it.

Why Music Matters in Yin
Holding a single pose for three, four or five minutes can stir up restlessness, and sometimes discomfort or wandering thoughts. Here, gentle music becomes a quiet ally. It soothes the nervous system and softens the urge to fidget, helps mark the slow passage of time, and holds a calm, contained space that supports turning inward. Rather than energising the practice, as music might in a flow class, in yin it deepens the stillness.
What Makes Great Yin Music
Music for yin should be even slower and more spacious than for most styles. Look for sound that is:
- Very slow and unhurried, with no driving beat or strong rhythm to pull you out of stillness.
- Spacious and minimal, ambient textures, soft drones, gentle flute or singing bowls, with room to breathe.
- Wordless and undemanding, so it supports introspection rather than capturing attention.
- Long and seamless, flowing continuously across the long holds without jarring transitions.
- Soft and warm, soothing enough to encourage deep release.
Building a Yin Playlist
To build a yin playlist, choose tracks with a single, even, peaceful mood and let them run as one seamless whole, matching the length to your practice so the music carries you all the way through. Ambient soundscapes, slow flute and the resonance of singing bowls are perfect company.
